Weekly Devotion 76. The Guardian of Israel

THE GUARDIAN OF ISRAEL

“The guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.” (Psalm 121:4)

“Pray for shalom in Yerushalyim. May those who love you prosper.” (Psalm 122:6)

The great Jewish sage, Rashi emphasised the fact that when we pray for the shalom of Yerushalyim we are in fact praying for the welfare of the Jewish people as a whole rather than being restricted to a small remnant. (i.e., Yerushalyim)

The verse in Psalm 122 is an invitation that comes with a promise of blessing for those who pray earnestly in support of God’s blessings and eternal purposes forIsrael. I wonder whether you have claimed the legitimacy of this  promise in your own life? If so, I anyway pray additional blessings for you in full measure today!

Remember that the guardian of Israel is inclining His ear to us this day with great interest. The same God who watches over His covenant people and restored them to their Homeland in 1948, is responding to believers who are standing in the gap in prayer for their ‘elder brother’ (the Jewish people) as end time events are moving relentlessly forward at breakneck speed.

This is something no more significant than now as we approach the Feast of Purim. Need we be reminded of the consequences for those who bless or curse Israel? (Genesis 12:3) The seriousness of it is may be one reason why Pesach follows so soon on the tail of Purim reinforcing for us a similar message of salvation and deliverance? If we do not grasp it now, God provides another opportunity shortly afterwards because He is a God of second chances!
