Weekly Devotion 261 – Bread of Disappointment

Bread of Disappointment by Raphael ben Levi

“So (Adonai) commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven He rained down manna on them as food; He gave them grain from heaven –  mortals ate the bread of angels; He provided for them to the full.” (Ps.78:23-25)

The sages taught that the manna referred to was literally the food of angels rather than symbolic! They add that when the Israelites ate, it became transformed into whatever taste they desired! Amazing!

The rabbis called the manna by a strange name: ‘The Bread of Disappointment.’ Despite it being God’s generous outpouring and gracious provision, the Israelites soon regarded it with disdain. Because it became their staple diet, day in, day out, they became over-familiarised with it and that which originally was highly prized became relegated to junk status.

My son calls me an incorrigible optimist which I choose to take as a compliment! After all, how can one be a believer and be anything less? Yet, how much time do we spend murmuring about the quality and sufficiency of God’s provision?

Today, we declare that Yeshua is “The Bread of Life” our Manna from Heaven who at all times feeds and nourishes us with the finest of fare. He is our sustenance, faithful and true, the Almighty God whose provision is consistently more-than-enough! He is our Redeemer who enriches our lives and fills it with an overflowing abundance! He is our ‘Bread of Appointment’ not the ‘Bread of Disappointment’ who we place our full confidence in; our Messiah who God sent in the fullness of time at just the right moment to feed us with His abundance – nothing less than the best, nothing worse than the best; always sufficient, never insufficient: forever within reach yet always above and beyond! If this is how God deals uniquely with each one of us, I hope we know how to respond?
