Weekly Devotions 364 – A Second Look

A SECOND LOOK – by Raphael ben Levi

Commenting on the passage, “It came to pass on a certain day, when he went into the house to do his work” and Potiphar’s wife asked him, “be with me” and “he fled and ran out,” our rabbis in Tractate Sotah say, “…Joseph entered the house to yield to her but his Father’s face appeared to him…” and he conquered the temptation.

At the moment of temptation, it is easy for everything a person has ever learned to lose meaning. If this is so, how was Joseph able to conquer the temptation? Because he saw his Father’s face.

A beautiful thing for us is to behold the Father’s face in the midst of our own inadequacies, and to discover His all-sufficiency.
